What is it?

I must admit I didn't see what this was until I read the description. Do you?

In the early 1900s French fashion designer Jacques Doucet commissioned Joseph Csaky to carve this avant-garde lion's head - its dimensions based on those of the head of a real lion, at 32 cm in length and 23.2cm in height.

Estimated value today = €80k - €120k

What a stunning stylised piece and immediately obvious once you know what it is.

WW1 Propaganda Painting

This was a commissioned piece for our local WW1 commemoration. It was one of 10 commissioned pieces by local artists with the theme being; what was happening at home during the war?

Mine depicts the propaganda that was ubiquitous and so important to the war effort in keeping the populace motivated and engaged in the necessary activities. The most prominent was for King and country, hence the centre piece.

The black lines could denote many things from barbed wire to international borders, war plans and much more.

Hiya,

I just found a CD with my original abstract paintings from 20+ years ago - the original Abstract Girl here is nearly 30 years old and belongs to my sister. I was dissatisfied with it (as usual back then), and gave it to her in what I thought was an unfinished state.

Later I looked at it with new eyes and enjoyed it for the first time - I still do now.

This painting started as a picture with bright colours but my mood changed halfway through so I started to cover it up and then take away, then cover up then take away in succession. The result is a complex layer of different moods, shapes and depths of colour.

Surrender

Surrender may seem like a simple act but history shows us that it is in fact an incredibly complex situation, this is reflected in the simple base with white flag overlayed with the 'business' of the terms that accompany any such situation.

"Ascension"

Mixed media on canvas in the Pollock style but with localised definition. The stone/grey background gives a feeling of the human effect on nature accentuated by the lack of colour. The multi layered effects that overlay the base hint at our journey through life on our way to what awaits us.

"Spirit of Pollock"

This was a commission by a client that wanted to combine the aspects of 'Gold Pollock' with the energy of 'Spirit Journey'.
I've added hints of bronze to the background colour to blend with the colour scheme of the clients home pallet.

"Roaring Fire"

A client asked if I could combine elements of 'Spirit Journey', 'Nebula' and 'The Dance' using a pallette of deep reds, oranges, golds and a turquoise blue. She wanted to have the feeling of an open fire above her mantel piece. 'Roaring Fire' is the result. (Thanks for the inspiration Myra.) Now I look at it the background is similar also to 'Buffalo Herder'.

"Mexico" - Triptych

This is a triptych of the 'Mexico' style as per my earlier pair (please see in November's posts).

"Oriental"

The piece is made up of a montage of images of the orient pasted onto the canvas then painted over to subdue them. A black 'kanji' style motif dominates the centre whilst subtle white trickles give the impression of oriental writing. Black trickles are the last layer with a single red hi-lite of trickle.
The idea is to represent the repressive cultures found in the east with the images and white writing depicting the true and pure nature of the populace with the harsh black governmental kanji taking centre stage - the black writing is representative of the doctrine the populace is made to live by - the red, speaks for itself!
